You may find a cornstarch-based recipe every once in awhile.

Panic sets in and you panic check your pantry, remembering you purchased cornstarch a long time back. You’re only left to ask, “is it still any good?”

Cornstarch can be used for a long time, even though it is something you buy only once in a while. Even if it may be considerably past the expiration date on the container, your question remains: “Does cornstarch go bad?”

Cornstarch can be used to thicken sauces or gravy. It is simply a powdered cornstarch, which is starch from corn kernels. It can be used for a variety of purposes, depending on the recipe. Unfortunately, cornstarch isn’t available for one-time use.

These three points are crucial and must be addressed:

  • Cornstarch storage:
  • Cornstarch can last for how long?
  • What is the shelf life of cornstarch?

Cornstarch storage:

Cornstarch can be used often if wheat flour is consumed. You don’t need to worry about temperature, so it does not need to be put in the refrigerator to prolong its use – room temperature is ideal.

If you live in a humid climate, it’s best to keep cornstarch in a dryer and cooler area, and it is also a good idea to store it in a resealable baggie. It should come in a large enough container, however the baggie can help prevent moisture from entering.

Cornstarch, like baking soda can absorb unpleasant odors which may alter the taste. Cornstarch can be contaminated by common household pests. It is best to transfer cornstarch into a sealed container that’s airtight and resealable.

Cornstarch: How long can it last?

Cornstarch has a good shelf life, provided it is kept properly. Moisture and other common pests are the biggest enemies to cornstarch.

You should throw out any evidence of mold, discoloration or other signs. If you see any evidence of mold or discoloration, it is most likely due to long-term exposure to moisture. As mold cannot form without the help of water, it’s best to err on the side of caution.

If you suspect that bugs may have invaded the cornstarch, it is possible to find out this by simply sifting through. Any intruders can be found by simply stirring the cornstarch with a spoon or shaking it. Throw out any small specks.

It is not a sign of moisture or a clump in your container. This should not be deemed alarming. The container may have been exposed to moisture. Everything should work fine as long there are no signs of mold. You can quickly break down any lumps with a spoon.

As long as the easy guidelines here are followed, there should be no issue – cornstarch should last forever.

These are just three of the tips we have discussed.

  • Cornstarch should be kept in an airtight container.
  • Cornstarch should be kept dry at room temperature. This is especially important in humid climates.
  • Protect your home from outside pests, and insects
